He's the Grammy-award winning UK soul artist who's had a string of hits across the world. So who better to get career advice from than the 'When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going' singer, Billy Ocean...

The best way to do business in the music industry is...

To be nice to people on the way up as you never know when you may need them again.

If I could give myself one piece of advice to a 25 year old Billy Ocean I'd tell him...

Don't get caught up with people who have the wrong mentality and who are not looking out for your best interests.

If I could change one thing about the music industry it would be...

To bring back the music men at record companies who know about music. When I started I was allowed to make the music I wanted to because the record labels understood musicianship but that has changed now.

My advice to anyone wanting to become a full time singer/musician is...

To do it for the love of it and don't get blinded by the money. Don't be afraid to write songs with other people. It is better to finish a good song with someone else than a mediocre song by yourself. Also you need to learn to communicate with the audience when you are on stage, it will show them that you appreciate them.

The thing I regret the most is...

I don't believe in having regrets. Every mistake is a lesson learned and it can only make you a better person.

Billy Ocean plays at The Irish Village on Friday February 3, tickets cost Dhs120 and doors open at 7pm.
