We grabbed 5 minutes with the 'Higher State of Consciousness' star ahead of his return to Trilogy
You've played in Dubai a few times now - how does it compare to other cities, can you play what you want here?
The first time was extremely memorable, and I had a great time last visit. So, I hope to have the same experience. There are a lot of fans who come out for my style of music, and there are a lot of people who are experimenting with electronic music. It's always fun, but the events end earlier than most other clubs in the world.
America seems to have re-discovered rave music in the last few years - have you noticed a younger crowd at your US gigs?
For me not so much. I know there are raves and all age events. But, I mostly play clubs which are over 21 years old. I get a mixture of older heads who have been into the music for a long time, and people who are in the thick of music at a younger age. I love it!
And what's your take on the noisy electro/dubstep that seems to be the soundtrack of choice?
I like some of it. Not really into the 'wobble' sound. But, the Detroit techno influenced style I dig. After hearing most dubstep for around 20 mins, I get the idea. Where much of it is following similar patterns and the result is tracks sounding very similar. But, if you hunt, you can find great music. But, it's the same with most things.
We've been living in the internet and downloading age for about a decade now - how has it affected your business and career overall?
Music piracy! That's all I have to say! It's file stealing not file sharing!
And what's the most exciting music development you've seen or heard in the past year?
I've been impressed with the world wide knowledge of dubstep. Even though it's not my thing 100%. Otherwise I'm not sure. I've been focusing most of the last year on Ovum Recordings and having a baby. So, those two things have been occupying most of my time.
You're a frequent food tweeter - what's the weirdest thing you've tasted on your travels?
I was vegan for 4 years in the 90's. Now I only eat fish meat. No Eggs, butter, dairy or land meat. And I'm also processed sugar free, only natural sugars like fruit, honey or agave. So, I tweet about food I come across that really is exciting to my limited palate. But, before New Years in Japan I ate blowfish for the 1st time, while it was in season. It was a small restaurant that seats 8 people so very exclusive local only place my friends took me to. The Chef left a bit of the poison from the fish on the sashimi so our lips would tingle. That was a bit of an interesting experience. I didn't die, and it was very tasty!
A DJ is only as good as the crowd: discuss...
A government is as good as it's people? A religion is as good as the crowd it attracts? Hmmm. Lots to say in a short amount of space. This is something to be discussed in person! Haha. But, I know a lot of really great DJs who perform before 25 people at a bar or club, and I heard a lot of DJs are aren't so good performing before a stadium of people. So, what's the point of view? Art is subjective!
