It might not seem it, but the Tecom area is now a hustling, bustling, hive of clublife. And thanks to the recent arrival of Chameleon at the Byblos and Rare at Media Rotana, it can now boast 5 fully fledged clubs, offering everything from forgotten funk to minimal and tech to dubstep and drum and bass in a 5 minute radius...
Casa Latina, Ibis Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Rd, ibishotel.com/gb/hotel-6540-ibis-al-barsha/index.shtmlThe most down-at-heel of the venues in Tecom, and all the better for it. This Cuban themed club has a capacity of 300, so it can get busy quickly, but with low-level lighting, cool and comfy booths and some of the best drink deals in town (Dhs20 for a beer or mojito all night long), it has a unique vibe that is very un-Dubai.Thursdays - Deep Crate, 9pm-2.30am, free. While the Freshly Laced crew might have disbanded, B-boy and turntable genius El Lobito is holding down the fort with his Deep Crate night every Thursday, offering the best of funk and hip hop. Commercial hip hop heads expecting Pitbull need not apply. Fridays - Loaded, 9pm-2.30am, free. Taking place on the last Friday of the month, the Loaded night regularly has to shut its doors before midnight as it reaches capacity. Ostensibly an indie night, but with a free-reign music policy that will take in everything from funk to 70s rock and roll and even dnb. Catwalk, Golden Tulip Hotel, goldentulipalbarsha.comThe longest-running Tecom club, Catwalk might have had high-fashion pretences when it first opened (hence the name), but the reality is a down-and-dirty club that focusses on underground music across the electronic board.Wednesdays - Addicts, 9pm-3am, free. With long-running dnb night Globalfunk still looking for a venue, you'll need to brave a mid-week night to get your bassline kicks in the city. But with a 2-4-1 drink deal before midnight and DJ JAB dropping a twisted set of classic and soon-to-be-classic beats, it's worth the Thursday pain. Thursdays - Glitch, House Arrest, Warped on rotation. 10pm-3am, free. Attention all house heads - if you haven't experienced a Catwalk Thursday yet, get down soon. With an unpretencious crowd, a laid-back door policy (not to mention a free one) and decent drink deals, Catwalk is a very safe bet to start your weekend off on the right foot. Warped specialise in twisted techno, Glitch are more on the straight techno and minimal tip, while House Arrest is, as the name suggests, an all encompassing house music affair, with a raucous atmosphere. Fridays - Cameo, 9pm-3am, ladies free before 11.30pm, Dhs60. Dubai isn't all endless RnB and electro mashups (is there a more heinous genre of music out there?), as there are a selection of retro-looking nights, with Catwalk's Cameo being the latest. With a playlist that cherry-picks from the best of the 60s, 70s, 80, 90s and noughties, and a power-hour where all the biggest hits from one band or act are played, it's an unashamedly fun and poppy party from start to finish. Chameleon, Byblos Hotel, facebook.com/chameleonclubdubaiHigh end, VIP clubbing in Tecom? Why, of course, thanks to the introduction of the glittering Chameleon club. Set in the penthouse of the hotel, it's a kaleidoscopic club with over 60,000 LED lights, a suspended DJ Booth and is looking to capture the dinner and dance crowd.Thursdays/Fridays - 8pm-3am. The club is putting its faith in its concept, high-end look and residents from the opening, and will be playing a mix of commercial house, chart house and RnB, with the odd Arabic track thrown in for good measure. Rare, Media Rotana, raretheplace.comWhile every club in Dubai is seemingly chasing the VIP dirham, Rare is doing so with a little more determination - the club capacity is around 150, which in turns, creates a high demand. Although in existence for a while now, the club has two new owners looking to raise this Victorian-look speakeasy into new territory. Fridays - Voodoo,10pm-3am. Boasting of an 'uplifting and eclectic sound, woven to seduce and possess the depth of the soul', we're not entirely sure what to expect from Frederick Stone's new venture, but with the launch on October 14, we're intrigued to find out. Rock Bottom's, Ramee Hotels, Rameehotels.com/ramee-rose-hotelSimilar in virtually every way to the perma-packed Bur Dubai branch, the Tecom Rock Bottom's offers the same filling food, cheesy-but-fun live band, decent-sized pool room and knee-quaking Bullfrogs, but without the Dhs100 return cab fare if you live in the Marina. If it ain't broke, as the old adage goes...Fridays - Brunch, 12-4pm, Karaoke from 8.30pm-11pm. Once you've had your fill at the massively cheap brunch (Dhs79 including two drinks), there's then time to get your fill of Dutch courage until the karaoke starts at 8.30pm. Personally speaking, karaoke is the Devil's work, but as is the general rule after brunch, anything goes so expect people doing the unexpected. |
