pacha-ibiza

It's the world's biggest clubbing brand, bar none, and is setting up shop in the World Trade Centre on July 29 with a huge array of DJs and entertainers. But did you know that it's one of the oldest night clubs in the world? Read on for 10 more must-know facts about Pacha...

1) Pacha was first opened in Ibiza in 1973, and pre-dated the words nightclub in Spanish - back then it was just called a club, or boƮte which is the French word for box.

2) They were the first people to throw all white parties (at least we know who to blame now) - but the UV lights they'd hired worked so well that everyone had to take off their glowing white clothes as they were being blinded and ended up dancing naked.

3) Pacha was the first club to stay open all year round in Ibiza - back in the 70s, clubs would close once the summer tourist season had finished, but Pacha carried on partying.

4) James Blunt has even written a song about the club. '1973' is an homage to the year the club was opened, and recounts a night out he had with a mystery girl called Simona.

5) There are over 20 Pacha franchises across the world, including London, New York, Sao Paulo, Sharm El Sheikh, and, if the rumours prove to be correct, soon to be a permanent base in Dubai...

6) Pacha has a famous house only policy in recent decades (the 70s and 80s showcased a very Balearic sound) but in recent years have made the move away from the funkier end of the spectrum and pulled in Luciano's Vagabundos night every Sunday which showcases the techier, wonkier end of the house spectrum.

7) The soundtrack on the 29th will come from a 6 DJ line up, with Pacha residents Syx, Josef Bamba and John Jacobsen supplying the headline tunes, with support from Genario, Roberto Mermand and Soulninja.

8) Josef Bamba, one of the Pacha residents, first shot to fame as the 2008 winner of the Movida Corona DJ Competition (see our cover story feature) and has since gone on to play venues across the world.

9) During the 70s Pacha had a reputation as the global hang-out spot for 'glamorous hippies' and is today very much seen as the clubbing choice of VIPs - so much so, you're likely to see P Diddy or Tommy Lee hanging out in the DJ booth.

10) Pacha feat. Syx, Josef Bamba and John Jacobsen, Friday July 29, World Trade Centre. 8pm-3am, Dhs150 entry, Dhs250 VIP. 4,000 free CDs to be given out on the night. Info and tables: 050 115 2544/ 050 911 0600.
