ramadan

While Dubai's nightlife scene might seem to be a 24 hour, non-stop affair, it takes an all important hiatus every Ramadan as the holy month falls.

Scheduled to arrive on or around August 1 and last for 4 weeks, or a full cycle of the moon, it ushers in a very different way of life, and we've put together a list of dos and don'ts to help you get the most out of the month...

Do...

Respect the month, and people fasting around you.

Make the most of the community spirit in the month. A large part of Ramadan is devoted to charity, so find out how you can get involved and make a difference.

Try your hand at several Iftars, where people will come to break their fast at sunset.

Try and avoid driving home between 3-5pm. The roads turn even more hazardous as drivers rush home to prepare their evening meals.

Wish 'Ramadan Kareem' to your Muslim friends and colleagues.

Stop smoking. With public smoking heavily frowned upon, it's the perfect time to give up the nicotine habbit.

Do use the month off wisely. Ramadan working hours apply to most offices (9am-3pm), so you'll have plenty of time on your hands. Learn a language, take up an instrument or re-organise your stamp collection.

Don't

Eat, smoke, drink or chew gum in public - find a secluded area, especially when you're at work.

Sing or dance in public. All clubs will be shut during Ramadan, and bars and pubs will only be serving from 7pm. There is no live music and nothing above background music in bars and pubs.

Play loud music in your car at home. And forget about that after-party.

Wear revealing or overly tight clothing. This rule applies throughout the year, but you'll find its enforced in public areas more rigidly during Ramadan.

Swear in public. Blasphemy is frowned upon anyway, but it's particularly insulting during the Holy Month.
