The New York Times warned that Paris’ once fabled nightlife is facing extinction this week. “DJs and musicians have also been abandoning the French capital, forcing a startling conclusion upon the city’s night-life professionals: Paris may soon be dead at night,” a newspaper declared. “Faced with mounting noise complaints, fines and closings, many Parisian bars and concert halls are struggling to stay afloat.” The paper cited gentrification, the smoking ban, bureaucracy and harsh policing as factors killing clubland. “The general law of silence that descends on our events and our places of living is poised to relegate the City of Light to become the European capital of sleep,” says a petition against the laws (signed by over 14,000 people). “To let people think that the Parisian night could or should flourish without disturbing the perfect tranquility of a single resident is dangerous duplicity.”
