Technical institute SAE have launched a digital journalism course called ‘backpack journalism’ which involves one properly trained professional using a hand-held digital camera to tell stories in a more immediate, more intimate fashion. You can learn to do it all and most importantly, learn how to create the image, which is the driving force of visual communication. In the field, a backpack journalist shoots, captures sound, produces, reports, interviews. Once back from the field, writes the script, in some cases even narrate the piece. Depending on circumstances, either edit the piece on the fly, or learn how best to work with an editor assigned to help. Students also get a diploma for their efforts.
